The Federal Communications Commission has approved the Cromwell Group's application to reduce the power of WVJS-1420 AM from 5,000 watts daytime and 1,000 watts nighttime to 980 and 20 watts, respectively.
The change, which I told you about in November, is being made because of the difficulty in getting the station into compliance with FCC regulations using its current four-tower array located along Kentucky 331 (old U.S. 60) on the west side of Owensboro, behind Time Warner Cable's main building.
WVJS will now broadcast using only the easternmost tower. All four towers are currently owned by the cable company, so it's not immediately clear what will happen to the ones that will no longer be used.
WVJS also has an FM translator, W263BG-100.5 FM, which is where most listeners now hear the station's programming, according to Cromwell Group owner Bayard "Bud" Walters.
