Be prepared for severe weather today

UPDATE, 8:20 a.m.:  Meteorologist Kerry Dean adds this very important bit of information - for which I thank him: "All SPC and NWS outlooks. watches, etc. use solid lines. Storms do not respect those lines so please don't forget, if you live in OR NEAR a watch box be prepared."  Thank you, Kerry!

As of 7:55 a.m. this morning, the Storm Prediction Center has all of the Tri-State area under at least a MODERATE risk of severe weather, with the east and southeast portions of the area under a HIGH risk.

Now is the time to know what you will do in case of severe weather, folks.  The time for suggesting this is long past, now I INSIST that you have a NOAA Weather Radio in your possession and ready to help warn you of any and all watches and warnings which may be issued today.

In addition, after the jump, I've posted an explanation from the National Weather Service in Paducah of what a Particularly Dangerous Situation watch is, and how it differs from your "garden variety" severe thunderstorm watch or tornado watch.

Any new watches which are issued today will scroll across your computer screen directly below the banner at the top here at JDTVB.  You can also find a handy weather radar on the Weather page, and weather radio info on the NOAA Weather Radio page.

Please, folks ... be watchful today, and stay safe, wherever you may be.

...THE IMPORTANCE OF PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION CONVECTIVE
WATCHES ISSUED BY THE STORM PREDICTION CENTER...

THERE ARE RARE OCCASIONS WHEN THE STORM PREDICTION CENTER IN NORMAN OKLAHOMA WILL ISSUE TORNADO OR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCHES EMPHASIZING THAT THIS IS A PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. THESE UNIQUE P D S OR PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION CONVECTIVE WATCHES ARE ISSUED WHEN THERE IS A WIDESPREAD AND SIGNIFICANT THREAT TO LIFE AND PROPERTY.

THIS SPECIFIC WORDING IS USED IN RARE SITUATIONS WHEN LONG LIVED...STRONG...E F 2 OR E F 3...AND VIOLENT...E F 4 OR E F 5... TORNADOES ARE POSSIBLE IN THE WATCH AREA. THE ENHANCED WORDING MAY ALSO BE FOUND IN SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCHES FOR EXCEPTIONALLY INTENSE AND WELL ORGANIZED CONVECTIVE WIND STORMS...SUCH AS DERECHOES.

THE DECISION TO ISSUE A PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION OR P D S CONVECTIVE WATCH IS AT THE DISCRETION OF THE STORM PREDICTION CENTER FORECASTER WHEN ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS ARE QUITE HAZARDOUS. P D S WATCHES ARE MOST LIKELY TO BE ISSUED IN A HIGH RISK AREA IDENTIFIED IN A CONVECTIVE OUTLOOKS ISSUED BY THE STORM PREDICTION CENTER.

THE FOLLOWING IS AN EXAMPLE OF AN ACTUAL P D S EVENT.

SEVERAL P D S TORNADO WATCHES WERE ISSUED FOR THE APRIL 27TH 2011 TORNADO OUTBREAK THAT COVERED PARTS OF MISSISSIPPI...ALABAMA...GEORGIA... TENNESSEE AND THE CAROLINAS. ON THAT DATE...NEARLY 200 TORNADOES WERE REPORTED RESULTING IN 316 FATALITIES. EIGHTEEN OF THESE TORNADOES WERE CONSIDERED VIOLENT...E F 4 AND E F 5.

IF YOU FIND YOUR HOME...SCHOOL OR BUSINESS IS PLACED UNDER A P D S WATCH...MAKE SURE YOUR EMERGENCY ACTION PLANS ARE READY FOR IMMEDIATE USE. IF A TORNADO OR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING IS ISSUED...TAKE COVER IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT WASTE TIME LOOKING FOR THREATENING WEATHER...YOU MAY END UP LOSING YOUR LIFE.

3ABN to air Free Indeed, featuring Indiana inmates' testimonies, beginning Sunday

A new series, shot entirely behind bars, begins this month on 3ABN. Hosted by 3ABN’s C. A. Murray, Free Indeed features the testimonies of inmates housed in several Indiana correctional facilities.

“Most prison ministry programs talk about what they’ve done for the prisoners,” Murray says. “However, this program is all about the prisoners sharing what Christ has done for them. They tell their stories in their own words—and they’re powerful!”

Each episode features prisoner testimonies with Lemuel Vega, of Christmas Behind Bars, music by the inmates, and an inspirational talk by C. A. Murray or Shelley Quinn.

Free Indeed airs on Sundays at 6:00 p.m. Central time (see this schedule for other airtimes).

In the Evansville area, 3ABN broadcasts on W23BV-D (channel 23.1) and is also carried by Dish Network (channel 9393). You can also watch online at 3abn.org.

The all-new NBC News Radio will bring listeners live simulcasts of breaking news from NBC and MSNBC, along with reports from top NBC News correspondents including Chuck Todd, Jim Miklaszewski, Andrea Mitchell, Pete Williams and Lisa Myers. Severe weather awareness campaign dates set for Tri-State

Given the events of Wednesday morning, many of us — if not most of us — are now painfully aware of the power of nature's fury, but it is always good to be as prepared as possible when the weather does take a nasty turn.

To help with that, statewide severe weather awareness campaigns will be held across Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky at some point this month.  Kentucky's campaign is all month long, beginning today.  Illinois' preparedness week is Mar. 4-10, and Indiana's will be held later in the month, from Mar. 18-24.

A major part of all severe weather awareness campaigns is the tornado drill.  Illinois and Kentucky residents, students and businesses will have the opportunity to participate in the drill on Tuesday, Mar. 6.  In Kentucky, the drill will take place at 9:07 a.m. Central time (10:07 Eastern), with Illinois' drill following at 10 a.m.

Indiana's drill — actually two drills — will be held on Mar. 21 at 9:15 a.m. and 6:35 p.m. Central time (10:15 and 7:35 Eastern).

Some of you may recall that last year, JDTVB teamed up with HoosierWX.com to provide severe weather preparedness information.  For your convenience, here are those articles once again, and I hope you'll find them helpful.
Of course, these articles aren't intended to replace official information which can be found as close as your nearest National Weather Service website.  Here, too, are links to the information they have compiled to keep you safe:
  • NWS CENTRAL ILLINOIS
    • Serving Clay, Lawrence and Richland counties in Illinois
  • NWS PADUCAH
    • Serving Edwards, Gallatin, Hamilton, Saline, Wabash, Wayne and White counties in Illinois; Gibson, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh and Warrick counties in Indiana; and Daviess, Henderson, Hopkins, McLean, Muhlenberg, Union and Webster counties in Kentucky
  • NWS INDIANAPOLIS
    • Serving Daviess, Knox and Martin counties in Indiana
  • NWS LOUISVILLE
    • Serving Dubois and Perry counties in Indiana, and Hancock and Ohio counties in Kentucky

Time Warner Cable completes its $3 billion takeover of Insight Communications

Time Warner Cable announced Wednesday that it has completed its $3 billion purchase of Insight Communications, a cable, internet and telephone provider which serves Evansville, Henderson, and several other Tri-State communities.

“Today we are pleased to welcome new customers, new employees and new communities to Time Warner Cable,” said Glenn Britt, Chairman and CEO of Time Warner Cable. “With this acquisition, we have expanded in areas that fit well with our Midwest operations at an attractive price. We are excited to begin building on Insight’s successes and serving our new customers.”

For the short-term, Insight's 760,000 customers in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio, will notice no major changes to their service. New products and services will be rolled out over the next few months.

As with Time Warner's rollout of its brand in the former NewWave service territories it purchased last year in Kentucky and Tennessee, it will be some time before customers see the new company's logo on signs, vehicles and billing statements.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • In the Tri-State area, Insight customers - in Evansville, Boonville, Cynthiana, Ft. Branch, Haubstadt, Huntingburg, Jasper, Mt. Vernon, Owensville, Poseyville & Princeton, Ind.; and Clay, Corydon, Dawson Springs, Henderson, Nortonville, Providence and St. Charles, Ky. - are now Time Warner Cable customers.
  • No decision has been announced on changes to rates, services or products, although the company says new products and services will be phased in over the next several months.
  • It isn't yet known if channels such as NFL Network and NFL RedZone, which are currently available to Insight customers, will remain in the lineup.  Time Warner Cable and the National Football League have long been at a stalemate with regard to carriage of those two networks.

UPDATE: NOAA Weather Radio transmitters back on the air

UPDATE #2, 3:16 a.m.:  All NOAA Weather Radio transmitters are now back on the air.  Kudos to the folks in Paducah for their FAST work!

UPDATE, 2:55 a.m.:  I have added the counties where folks will be affected by these outages this morning.  If you know someone who lives in these areas, call them and let them severe weather IS on its way ... it's just a couple of hours (maybe less) west of us.  They will need to know that the weather radio might not wake them up.

The National Weather Service office in Paducah reports early this morning that several of its NOAA Weather Radio transmitters are down due to mechanical difficulties.

The affected transmitters which serve portions of the Tri-State are:
  • KIG76 (162.550 MHz) in Evansville - which serves all or part of Edwards, Wabash and White counties in Southeastern Illinois; Dubois, Gibson, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh and Warrick counties in Southwestern Indiana; and Henderson and Union counties in Western Kentucky.
  • WXJ91 (162.525 MHz) in Madisonville - which serves all or part of Caldwell, Christian, Crittenden, Daviess, Henderson, Hopkins, Lyon, McLean, Muhlenberg, Todd, Trigg, Union and Webster counties in Western Kentucky.
  • KXI26 (162.450 MHz) in Hopkinsville - which serves all or part of Christian, Todd and Trigg counties in Western Kentucky.
Two additional transmitters in Southeast Missouri are also down.

The Paducah office reports that efforts are underway to get these up and running once again as soon as possible. In the meantime, if you are in an area served by one of these transmitters, be sure to follow another information source such as TV or radio to get the latest severe weather information.

Ill. residents can win a weather radio from IESMA and IEMA

March is Severe Weather Preparedness Month in Illinois, and the Illinois Emergency Services Management Association (IESMA) and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) are joining forces to encourage Illinois residents to have National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) all-hazards weather alert radios. A weather alert radio provides potentially life-saving alerts about approaching severe weather and other hazards in your area 24 hours a day.

As part of their awareness campaign, IESMA and IEMA are sponsoring the "Weather Alert Radios Save Lives" contest throughout March to promote the use of weather alert radios. The contest is open to all Illinois residents. To participate, simply click on the contest link at ready.illinois.gov, read a narrative about weather alert radios and take a quick five-question quiz. After completing the quiz, you'll need to fill out the entry form and click "submit." A total of 100 NOAA weather alert radios will be awarded to participants throughout Illinois.

EDITOR'S NOTE:  Weather radios can also be found for sale at many stores across Illinois and elsewhere, such as Walmart and RadioShack, just to name a couple.  I encourage everyone - not just in Illinois but across the Tri-State - to get a weather radio, program it and keep it at the ready in your home.  For more NOAA Weather Radio information, visit JDTVB's NOAA Weather Radio page or the official NOAA Weather Radio website.

Ky. congressman receives Champion of Public Broadcasting Award

U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers (R-Ky./5th)
A Kentucky congressman has received an award for his support of public broadcasting.

The Association of Public Television Stations (APTS) today presented U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) with the Champion of Public Broadcasting Award during the 2012 APTS Public Media Summit in Washington, D.C.

“I am honored to accept this kind award from the Association of Public Television Stations,” Rogers said. “I applaud APTS for their efforts to bring quality programming and educational content into the homes of all Americans.”

The award is given to members of Congress and other individuals who safeguard the ability of local public television stations to provide educational, informational, cultural and other essential public services to their communities.

“We’re so proud to see this Champion of Public Broadcasting Award be presented to our great Kentucky Congressman, Hal Rogers,” said KET executive director and CEO Shae Hopkins. “Throughout his distinguished career, Congressman Rogers has remained committed to improving the lives of the people he serves in eastern and southern Kentucky, and indeed the entire Commonwealth. A champion of education, Congressman Rogers has strongly supported the mission of KET and public broadcasting to provide access to quality educational programs and instructional resources. We are grateful for his longtime support and friendship.”

▼Read more of this story after the jump.

Serving Kentucky’s 5th Congressional District since 1981, Rogers is currently in his 16th term representing southern and eastern Kentucky. Throughout Rogers’ 29-year tenure on the Appropriations Committee, he has served on eight different subcommittees, including leadership roles as Chairman or Ranking Member of three subcommittees.

“Congressman Rogers is a longtime supporter and friend of public television, especially KET, his local station,” said Patrick Butler, president and CEO of APTS. “As Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, Congressman Rogers has safeguarded federal funding for public broadcasting, even while leading the necessary effort to restrain federal spending and reduce the national debt. His support is directly tied to the education mission of public television, which stations like KET perform so well, and we are very grateful to the Congressman for standing with us in these most challenging times.”

Butler concluded: “Congressman Rogers has a long history of serving the special needs of rural America and the Appalachian region, and those needs include the education, job training, informational and other services that public television provides in even the most hard-to-reach areas of our country. KET is the only statewide broadcast medium in Kentucky. We at APTS are grateful to our colleagues at KET for demonstrating the full potential of public television to serve the American people, and we are especially honored to call such a distinguished public servant as Congressman Rogers a champion of public broadcasting.”

WILLIAM LEVY
Levy was born in Cuba and very early on knew he would go after his dreams, even if it meant leaving his beloved country and risking his life. His incursion in acting was a supporting role on Telemundo’s “Los Teens,” a series about Hispanic teenagers growing up in the United States. Prior to “Los Teens,” Levy had appeared in two reality shows, also for Telemundo, and a music video. SPADER LEAVING THE OFFICE

James Spader, who joined NBC's The Office as eccentric boss Robert California for last season's finale, will leave the show at the end of this season.  The AP reports that Spader only wanted to do one season of the show, and NBC obliged him. [AP via TVNewsCheck]

SAWYER, COOPER NAMED FAVORITE "CURRENT EVENTS PERSONALITIES"

Harris Interactive polled more than 2,000 adults recently, asking which "current events personality" was their favorite.  And, while NBC's Brian Williams may hold a substantial ratings lead among the broadcast network anchors, he could only muster third place in this survey - ABC's Diane Sawyer was first, with 23%.  Anderson Cooper was second with 19%.

Blustery radio host Rush Limbaugh came in first in the "least favorite" category, with 46% of those surveyed choosing him.  Bill O'Reilly was the second least-liked, with Nancy Grace taking third.  [Mediaite]

LOW RATINGS MAY KILL PARENTHOOD

NBC's Parenthood will wrap its third season tonight at 9 p.m. CT, and it could be the end of the line for the show.  Averaging a 2.0 rating, the show has fallen far from its salad days when it got a jolt from NBC's Olympics coverage back when it debuted. [Media Life]

WOW! named one of the Best Places to Work in Indiana for second straight year

For the second year in a row, WOW!, which provides internet, cable TV and phone service in and around the Evansville area, has been named one of the Best Places to Work in Indiana by Best Companies Group, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, BizVoice, Inside Indiana Business, and the Indiana Economic Development Corporation.

The top companies are chosen based on employer reports about workplace practices and policies, combined with comprehensive employee survey results. While completing the survey is optional for employees, over 90% of WOW! employees participated in the survey.

The designation recognizes Indiana employers who create an environment in which employees feel valued and therefore are part of a workplace structure that's positive and productive for their business and the community. WOW! employs nearly 150 people in the Evansville region.

"Our team members work hard every day to create a WOW! experience for each other and our customers. It's an honor to have the Chamber recognize this hard work for two straight years," commented Robert DiNardo, VP/general manager of WOW!'s Evansville market.

WOW! will be recognized and honored at the 2012 Best Places to Work in Indiana Awards Dinner coordinated by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, May 3rd.

Non-duplication rules force changes in Wabash Independent Networks channel lineups

Wabash Independent Networks (WIN) digital video and cable customers in Southern Illinois are seeing some big channel lineup changes in their choices for broadcast channels.

JDTVB Southern Illinois Correspondent James Hampsten reports that the company's former offerings, which included local stations from Evansville, Terre Haute, Paducah-Harrisburg-Cape Girardeau and St. Louis, have been heavily modified because of the FCC's non-duplication rules.

For example, in Flora, where WIN operates the cable system, the only Evansville station now carried is independent Local 7 WTVW.  St. Louis' KDNL (ABC), KMOV (CBS), KTVI (Fox) and KSDK (NBC) are now the only affiliates of those networks available to viewers.  WSIU out of Carbondale is the PBS choice.

Digital video customers' local network choices will now depend upon where they live.  According to the company's website, these are those lineups:

CLAY & MARION counties
(St. Louis Network Affiliates)
RICHLAND, JASPER & EFFINGHAM counties
(Terre Haute Network Affiliates)
EDWARDS, WABASH & WAYNE counties
(Evansville Network Affiliates)
KMOV (CBS) - ch. 104
KSDK (NBC) - ch. 105
KDNL (ABC) - ch. 106
KTVI (Fox) - ch. 115
WTWO (NBC) - ch. 102
WAWV (ABC) - ch. 103
WTHI (CBS) - ch. 110
WTHI (Fox) - ch. 111
WEVV (CBS) - ch. 112
WEVV (Fox) - ch. 113
WFIE (NBC) - ch. 114
WEHT (ABC) - ch. 125

As in Flora, all of these areas will continue to receive WTVW and WSIU.

And then there's Noble, Ill., where the lineup is even more different.  Customers there have WFIE and WEHT from Evansville for NBC and ABC, respectively, but KTVI for Fox and WTHI for CBS.

Confused yet? You're not alone. We're still trying to figure out why St. Louis' CW affiliate, KPLR, has been removed entirely. It seems to make no sense, given the fact that Terre Haute has no CW affiliate, and Evansville's - WAZE-CW19 - barely exists.

James is making efforts to get further explanation for the changes from WIN general manager Jeff Williams, and as soon as we have more information, we will bring it to you.

Sandman goes national: 103GBF rocker to host Loudwire beginning in mid-March on all Townsquare Media rock stations

THE SANDMAN
There's big news on the rock radio scene this afternoon - 103GBF's Mike Sanders (better known as The Sandman) is going national!

The Sandman will begin hosting a new two-hour weekend show called Loudwire, which will debut in mid-March on 103GBF and all of Townsquare Media's rock stations across the country.

"After 31 years in rock radio, this is another challenging step for me in my career.  I’m excited for the (opportunity) that my company has given me," he wrote on 103GBF's site earlier today.  "Loudwire will feature not only the top rock songs in the country, but also artist interviews and plenty of tasty rock news powered by the ultimate rock website, Loudwire.com."

Stay tuned to 103GBF and 103GBFRocks.com for more info, as the date and time of the show's premiere have not yet been announced.

Congratulations, Sandman!

WPSD to air Louisiana St./Mississippi game Saturday instead of PGA golf

Some Tri-Staters who tune in to Paducah NBC affiliate WPSD Local 6 on Saturday afternoon expecting to see the PGA Tour – WGC Accenture Match Play Championship will find something else on in its place.

The station, because of its contractual obligation to the SEC Network, will instead air the men's basketball game between Louisiana State and Mississippi, which tips off at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

WPSD will air the final round of the golf tournament on Sunday.

Most Tri-State viewers will be able to see the tournament in its entirety, of course, on 14WFIE, so if you live in an area where both WPSD and WFIE are available to you on cable or over-the-air, and you want to see golf instead of basketball, simply turn to 14.

EDITOR'S NOTE:  The LSU/Mississippi game will also be televised live on Local 7 WTVW (Evansville), WBKO-ABC 13.1 (Bowling Green) and WAVE-3 (Louisville).
